Best of Long Beach: Gabe Gordon

The District‘s second Best of Long Beach hit this week and here’s a quick bite from beer baron Gabe Gordon of Beachwood BBQ:

Beachwood BBQ (131 1/2 Main St., Seal Beach 90740. 562.493.4500; beachwoodbbq.com) began as a little brick box, a place just steps from the sea, where racks of slow-smoked ribs met an equally appealing (and ever-changing) mix of craft beers. The restaurant is nearing its second anniversary now, and with one expansion behind it (adding on to both the bar and the dining room), Beachwood almost seems a different place. But always at the center of the restaurant is sideburned chef-owner Gabe Gordon. Though it’s sometimes tough to fit anything into his hectic restaurant schedule, here’s where Gordon heads in those few off-hours:

Enrique’s When he’s not grabbing some bulgogi at one of his favorite Korean barbecue joints, Gordon likes to fill up at Enrique’s. “Mexican food is one of the things I always fall back on. This place should be on everyone’s list.” 6210 E. Pacific Coast Hwy., Long Beach 90803. 562.498.3622

Koi Gordon has nothing but praise for Koi, Seal Beach’s standout sushi spot, where he says he eats almost every week. “The family that runs it is very nice, and the fish is outstanding.” 600 Pacific Coast Hwy., Seal Beach 90740. 562.431.1186

Retro Row Keen observers at Beachwood might recognize that the restaurant’s retro style also carries over to Gordon, who likes to collect Hawaiian shirts. And outside of a few stores in Orange County, Gordon says Retro Row’s vintage vaults are what to hit. Fourth Street, between Junipero and Cherry avenues, Long Beach 90802

Turcs You can’t quite see Turcs’ outside (thanks to a wall of Wrigley-worthy ivy), but Gordon likes it for its inside: “It’s a great biker bar.” 16321 Pacific Coast Hwy., Sunset Beach 90742. 562.592.2311
